| RAKEGILL KUNE KUNE PIGS
Our new venture into pigs is doing very nicely. Having decided
that can manage the ponies and pigs together we purchased two
sows in February and they were duly introduced to “Maurice”
the boar. “Jennifer” and “Clarissa”, as
they are known have since produced their first litters of seven
and four piglets, respectively.
We chose Kune Kunes because of their reputation of having great
temperaments. This reputation is well deserved and they are ideal
“first time” pigs. They are equally suited as a smallholder’s
pig, or for someone just wanting a pet or companion. The breed
originated in New Zealand and is classed as a rare breed in its
home country. Obviously, it is still rare in the UK too.
The pigs continue to flourish, it is amazing to us just how popular they are, with waiting lists building up for each litter. So far our pigs have travelled, not only throughout Cumbria, but to Northern Ireland, Scotland and the south of England. Two of our pigs are on loan to the Lakeland Heavy Horse Centre (www.lakesheavyhorses.co.uk) where they are really enjoying the attention. The creators of the St Bees Maize Maze have purchased another, where she is one of the attractions.
We hope you enjoy seeing the pictures of our various pigs. We
will occasionally have pigs for sale, so if you are as mad as
we are, please contact
us!
